A busy October

BUHS has several great events in the next few weeks that we hope you and your family will attend. First, Parent Conferences will be held October 8 from 3PM to 7PM at BUHS. This a great chance for you to check in with your students' teachers and get some feedback on how they are doing in their classes.

Second, Brattleboro Union High School is pleased to bring “High and Seek,” an interactive presentation about substance abuse to BUHS on October 21, 2015.  Melissa Fernald, a licensed drug and alcohol counselor, sets up a mock teenage bedroom as part of her presentation.  She invites adults to search for 70 items that may indicate a teen is involved in high risk behavior such as underage drinking, substance abuse, cutting, burning, eating disorders, sexual activity and more.  Attendees get an up close look at the items in the room and are shown how they can be used. The presentation reviews the latest drug and alcohol trends, an overview of slang terms, psycho-education surrounding addiction and includes a discussion on techniques for effectively communicating with teens.

Anyone over the age of 21 who works or lives with teenagers would benefit from this presentation taking place on October 21, 2015 in the Multipurpose Room at Brattleboro Union High School.  Doors open at 6, the presentation begins at 6:30 and lasts for 120 minutes. Childcare can be provided during the event.   Please contact Hanako Jones, Student Assistance Program Counselor at or 802-451-3452 by October 19th to reserve childcare space and/or with questions.  Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The third event takes place the next day in our gymnasium. On October 22nd from 1:00-5:00 PM the Windham Workforce Investment Board will present the 3rd Annual Career Expo. For the second year it is being hosted in the BUHS gymnasium. There are a wide variety of employers attending from various businesses in the region. For our 10th and 11th grade students, there are employment opportunities for part time and seasonal work and for our 12th graders there are opportunities to begin a productive career after graduation next June. Our counselors will be running groups to help prepare students on interview skills. The counselors will then bring their groups of students to the expo. Please encourage your students to attend and to use their counselor as a resource to get ready for the Expo. This is a great chance for our students to access local employers to find our more about careers in the Brattleboro area. More information and an up to date employer list can be found at .

I hope you can join us for the presentation on October 21st and that you will encourage your student to access the Career Expo as well.
